Providence Health & Services Surgery Tech II Float in Mission Hills, California


Providence is calling a Surgery Tech II Float, (Full Time/Variable Shift) to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA.

We are seeking a Surgery Tech II Float who will perform a variety of technical duties to scrub in surgery. Prepare operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques. The Surgical Technologist performs specific duties while covering for Surgical Tech on break which include but are not limited to: provide active coverage, continue assisting surgeon during operation within the surgical technologist scope of practice, prepares rooms, assists the surgical team during operative procedures, assists in cleaning and preparing the room between procedures, maintains aseptic technique. Provides technical services and assists in operating room as assigned and directed

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate Providence Health System-San Fernando Valley Service Area's core values of respect, justice, compassion, stewardship, and excellence to customers, employees, and visitors; and provides quality service in the performance of work assignments and duties

  • Implement and maintain established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives as well as quality assurance, patient/customer safety, environmental, and infection control policies

  • Assist surgeons during operations limited to the surgical technologist scope of practice

  • Cover meal and rest breaks for surgical techs

  • Assist in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges. Reports incorrect counts immediately to the surgeon and circulator

  • Assist with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies

  • Enhance personal growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings, and workshops

  • Orient and train assigned personnel. Act in a preceptor role

  • Prepare rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment

  • Prepare for surgical cases for the following day, by stocking case carts, reviewing preference cards and surgery schedule

  • Check the supplies for outdates

  • Assist the surgical team during operative procedures

  • Assist in cleaning and preparing rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning

  • Drape patients for surgical procedures.

  • Maintain a surgical "neutral zone" for passing of surgical sharps

  • Maintain aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Report all breaks in aseptic technique immediately to the surgeon and RN circulator. Wear eye protection at all times

  • Provide comfort and support for patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy

  • Identify and cares for specimens

  • Assure all surgeon/procedure specific needs are planned ahead and made readily available. Updates physician preference cards as needed

  • Participate in unit/department specific quality improvement activities

  • Cover on call assignments, arriving at Medical Center within 30 minutes of notification

  • Attend meetings as required

  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • Minimum of two (2) years scub experience in at least one advanced speciality (cardiovascular, orthopedics, etc)

  • National Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) issued by the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist or the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers sponsored by the American Heart Association. (NOTE: If employee/applicant has certification by the American Red Cross, this will be accepted until expiration. At that time, renewal must be sponsored by the American Heart Association.)

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • 1 year scrub experience in acute care (hospital)

  • Trauma experience
